Understanding and assessing 3D injection molding simulation

One-day course of the SEM Academy, guided by SEM

One-day course on injection molding simulation, built around one customer order that runs through the whole day: what a simulation shows, what it leaves open, and how it supports decisions on material, gating, cooling, and mold trial. Afterward, you deepen the material in the app.

The course day

Understanding and assessing 3D injection molding simulation

For everyone who commissions simulation results, reads them or decides on them.

You read simulation results with their quantity, scale and limit of validity, assess material and gating variants against the customer requirement, use the cooling time demand for mold assessment and quotation, transfer simulation values to the machine, and take a deviation in the mold trial through SEM to a verified intervention.

Sample question

One question from the practice round “Flatness of the sealing surface”.

A housing must keep a free flatness of at most 0.20 mm at its sealing surface. The simulation shows 0.15 mm flatness at the sealing surface. We measure 0.17 mm. The report also lists a Deflection, all effects result of 0.45 mm.

How do we compare simulation and measurement at the sealing surface?

Choose an answer.

  1. ACompare Deflection, all effects, with any point deviation.
  2. BEvaluate flatness in the right direction with the same datum and state, and check several parts.
  3. CCompare the values regardless of support and assembly state.

Show the solution

The correct answer is B: Evaluate flatness in the right direction with the same datum and state, and check several parts.

Compare 0.15 and 0.17 mm of flatness using the same evaluation. The 0.45 mm Deflection, all effects, answers a different question. Check datum, state, and repeatability. That shows whether the sealing surface meets the requirement and how well the simulation predicts the actual behavior.

This was a practice question from the one-day course on injection molding simulation. This is how participants keep learning in the app after the course day.

Who it is for

The one-day course is for project managers, development, mold and process owners, quality, and technical leadership (project management, development, manufacturing, quality, and leadership). Technical buyers are welcome.

The one-day course belongs to the SEM Academy and teaches how to read and judge results, whatever software produced them. Prior knowledge of simulation or SEM is not required; technical terms are explained where a decision needs them. The work follows SEM, the method of the SEM Academy.

Sequence

  1. Course dayA customer order guides through the day: reading the requirements, model and material data, filling, holding pressure and shear, shrinkage and warpage, gating with tunnel or valve gate, cooling and cycle time, machine and mold trial. After that a second case from practice, a cover with sink marks, which the team takes through SEM to a verified intervention. Group work and discussion are built into the schedule.
  2. Practice in the appAfter that, the app guides each participant through the topics of the day until the submission deadline: read, deepen, refresh, with knowledge questions, practice rounds and Challenges on the course case. It runs in the browser without an account; the learning status stays on the device.
  3. CertificateWhoever completes the learning path reports the result to the instructor and receives the Certificate of Completion.
